By now many fans know the big names on defense in the SEC. I want to look at a few guys beneath the regional radar that are primed for a big season for their team. Tomorrow I will give you five offensive players to know about before the 2011 season so you can impress your friends with a little extra knowledge.

LB C.J. Mosley, Alabama
As a freshman, the 4-star recruit from Theodore, AL made 67 tackles. Mosley is part of a linebacking crew loaded with familiar names like Dont’a Hightower, Courtney Upshaw, and Nico Johnson. In a three week stretch of SEC play last year, Mosley made 30 tackles against Tennessee, LSU, and Mississippi State. He also picked off a pass against Florida and Georgia State and returned both for touchdowns. Mosley has been described as having a high football IQ, and like all Alabama linebackers, he can run.

DE Tenarius Wright, Arkansas
Wright will go from back up to starter at defensive end for the Hogs. The 6’2’’ 252lbs. Wright tied for 12th in the SEC in sacks with five, including two against Alabama. Wright also crunched Chris Relf to end the Mississippi State game as the Hogs escaped from Starkville with a double overtime victory. See the 1:30 mark of the highlight below. That is Wright jumping the snap and making the play. Playing opposite All-SEC defensive end Jake Bequette, Wright will have the opportunity to make a name for himself in 2011.

LB Daren Bates, Auburn
As Josh Bynes (Tyler Wilson breathes a sigh of relief) and crew depart Auburn, Bates will be counted on to improve upon his 48 tackle, two forced fumble performance from 2010. Bates started nine games in 2010 after making the move from safety where he started 13 games as a freshman. Bates relies more on his speed that his size. Bates is 5’11’’ and 205 lbs., but he can cover ground quickly. Keep an eye on him in 2011.

CB Sanders Commings, Georgia
Fans know about CB/KR Brandon Boykin, but less know about rising junior Sanders Commings, for now. Commings has ideal size for a cornerback at 6’2’’ and 217 lbs. Commings snared three interceptions last year and made 36 tackles. While the front seven tries to create pressure on the quarterback without Justin Houston, the defensive backs will have to cover a little bit longer. With Commings and Boykin, that should not be a problem.

LB Shaq Wilson, South Carolina
Wilson missed almost the entire 2010 season with a hamstring injury, but he is back for the 2011 season. Wilson led the Gamecocks in tackles in 2009 with 85 tackles. The former 3 star recruit from Jacksonville is 5’11’ and 223 lbs. and will start at ‘Mike’ linebacker in 2011. In South Carolina 4-2-5 scheme, Wilson and fellow linebacker Rodney Paulk will be counted on to make numerous tackles, especially against the run.
